Air mattress, adjustable bed comparison

The nursing profession is a common repository of information about bed's automated adjustment for specific purposes. A number of terms refer to the positioning of a patient for health and comfort reasons. The electric adjustable bed can be put into the Fowler's position, or so that the head is raised to an angle of 45 degrees of more. This is a good option when the patient is eating. For nasotracheal suctioning or during a nasagrastic tube placement Fowler's position is also useful. Some economically deprived patients may have a long history of sleeping on not much more than an air mattress. Adjustable bed experiences may be new to some people so it's a good idea to explain to the conscious patient what you plan to do before proceeding. The semi-Fowler's position raises the patient about 30 degrees, which helps improve lung expansion.

Another healthcare tool for positioning is the Trendelenburg, in which the entire frame is tilted with the head down. When postural drainage is desired, such as when secretions from the lungs are an issue, this use of the electric adjustable bed is optimal. Some patients experience poor peripheral circulation; this can be helped with the Trendelenburg position as it promotes venous return. These motorized beds can be useful even to those who are so sleep-deprived because of discomfort or excessive pain that they would be happy on even an air mattress. Adjustable bed position changes can be of great relief to these patients. Experimenting with angles and adjusting such things as the adjustable beds, lighting and sound, and making sure the patient is warm or cool enough, can all be mercifully sleep-inducing efforts.
